Two days ago Wal-Mart announced in USA Today that they are “promoting
25,000 employees in the fourth quarter as it wraps up a year-long campaign
highlighting opportunities for career development and financial stability at
the company.” They also said they will be promoting some hourly workers to
management or other positions increasing their responsibility. Also, they will
promote 35,000 workers from temporary to part-time and eventually another
35,000 from part- time to full time by the end of the year. This may seem great,
but none of the employees will be able to get benefits, they will just be
working more hours.
After all of the research I have
done on Wal-Mart, and after watching the two videos on PBS Is Wal-Mart good for
America and one on Netflix The high Cost of a Low Price. I have concluded that
Wal-Mart is bad for America. I believe that Wal-Mart sells some products
cheaper, but their products are not of good quality. Also, I can find food at
King Soopers at the same price and better Quality. I wonder why they think they
have the lowest prices on everything. I also still want to do more research to
see if the quality of their products that are not their name brand products are
the same quality as other stores; for an example: Campbell’s soup at Savers
versus the Campbell’s soup at Wal-Mart; because Wal-Mart buys the soup from Campbell’s
at a lower cost so they can sell it at a lower cost. I also heard from someone
the other day that the CEO of Wal-Mart is good friends with Obama and Michelle
Obama had her obesity campaign through Wal-Mart also, so this really makes me
think about how much the government is behind Wal-Mart.
All of the Articles had some
positive points about Wal-Mart, but out of the 10 that I read only two had all positive
points. Yes Wal-Mart creates more jobs, but a lot of people lose jobs because
of Wal-Mart. Also I learned that only 10% of what they sell is American made.
After researching Wal-Mart I found that there are plenty of bad raps in the
media about Wal-Mart. I wonder if I can find more positive information for my
next assignment. Overall, after doing this research, I don’t think I want to
step into another Wal-Mart again, and I hope you enjoyed the pictures on this
blog.
